A review of the 457 Temporary work visa program means that skilled overseas workers will now be entitled to the same pay as their Australian counterparts. This change comes into effect on January 2010, and according to the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Evans, it serves two purposes.
"It ensures overseas workers are not brought in more cheaply to undercut Australian workers and their conditions" said Senator Evans.
"Secondly it ensures that Australian workers aren't disadvantaged because overseas workers will now be more expensive and preference will go to Australian workers.
Other changes to the 457 work visa program will enable businesses to gain faster access to overseas skilled workers by speeding up the application process for the 457 sponsored work visa.
